How to protect your Teeth from Cavities and Gum Disease ?
- Brushing : Use soft-bristled toothbrush and apply gentle pressure, both of which may help reduce the risk of injuries to the gums. Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against the gums. Move the brush back and forth gently in short strokes, brushing the outer, inner and chewing surfaces of the teeth. Keep the good habit of brushing twice a day, in the morning and at night before sleeping.
- Flossing : No one like to floss. But flossing is important for keeping your teeth from cavities. Our teeth have 5 sides, and all of them need to be cleaned regularly. Even when we brush every day, we are still only cleaning 3 of the sides. Therefore, flossing is mandatory.
- Mouthwash : Rinse your mouth daily with a fluoride-containing mouthwash. Some rinses also have antiseptic properties. For an added boost to your oral hygiene routine, rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash.
- Fluoride toothpaste : Fluoride helps strengthen your tooth enamel to combat tooth decay. Drinking water with fluoride, is one of the easiest and most beneficial things you can do to help prevent cavities.
- No sugary and acidic drinks : Sugary and acidic drinks and foods cause a reaction in your mouth that leads to tooth decay. Avoid carbohydrates which can remain on the tooth surface. If sticky foods are eaten, brush your teeth soon afterwards.
- Treat dry mouth : If you notice that you have dry mouth, talk to your dentist and even your doctor. Dry mouth can be a symptom of a medical condition that needs treatment. It can also contribute to oral health issues such as bad breath, plaque formation, gum disease and cavities.
- Brush your tongue : Don’t neglect your tongue! Your tongue harbors bacteria too. So use toothbrush or a tongue scraper to give it a cleaning.
- Visit your Dentist : It is vital for the health of your teeth and gums that you visit your dentist for a dental cleaning twice a year. Because, only a dentist has the expertise to see symptoms or signs of trouble that you can’t.
