What counts as a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is any mouth problem that needs prompt attention to stop severe pain, control bleeding or swelling, treat an infection, or save a tooth that’s been knocked out or broken. If you’re dealing with any of those right now, you don’t have to wait. As your Indianapolis emergency dentist, we hold same-day appointments open and welcome walk-ins, so you can be treated today instead of weeks from now.

Dental pain rarely settles on its own, and an untreated infection can spread. Calling early gives us the best chance to relieve the pain and protect the tooth.

Emergencies we treat the same day

  • Severe toothache or infection: Throbbing pain, lingering sensitivity, or a toothache that keeps you up at night.
  • Knocked-out tooth: Acting fast gives us the best shot at saving it.
  • Broken, chipped, or cracked tooth: From a fall, a sports hit, or biting something hard.
  • Swelling or an abscess: A sign of infection that needs care quickly.
  • Lost filling or crown: An exposed tooth is vulnerable to more damage.
  • Wisdom tooth pain: Impacted or infected wisdom teeth can flare up suddenly.
  • Bleeding or swollen gums: Sometimes a sign of gum infection that shouldn’t be ignored.
Not sure whether it qualifies? Call your nearest office and we’ll help you decide what to do next.

What to do before you get to us

A few steps at home can protect the tooth while you’re on the way.
  • Knocked-out tooth: Handle it by the crown, not the root. Try to place it back in the socket, or keep it in milk or saliva, and get to us right away.
  • Broken or chipped tooth: Rinse with warm water, save any pieces, and use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek for swelling.
  • Abscess or swelling: Call now. A gentle warm saltwater rinse can ease discomfort while you head in.
  • Lost filling or crown: Keep the crown if you have it, avoid chewing on that side, and bring it with you.
  • Bleeding: Press clean gauze on the area with steady pressure to help it slow down.

Walk-ins and same-day appointments

You don’t need a referral, and you don’t need to be an existing patient. We treat first-time patients in an emergency and prioritize getting you out of pain.

  • Same-day appointments: Call and we’ll work you in as quickly as we can.
  • Walk-ins welcome: We accommodate walk-ins whenever possible; calling ahead helps us hold your spot.
  • Evening and weekend access: Many of our Indiana offices stay open past 5 p.m. and on Saturdays.

With offices across Indianapolis and the surrounding area, there’s usually one close by. Find your nearest location to see who can see you soonest.

What an emergency visit costs

The honest answer is that it depends on what’s causing the emergency. A visit starts with an exam and any needed X-rays, and the treatment that follows, whether that’s an extraction, a root canal, or a filling, drives the final cost. We tell you the price before we begin, never after.

We accept most insurance plans, including Medicaid, and offer financing through CareCredit, Sunbit, and Proceed Financial, along with self-pay options and free second opinions.

How your visit works

  • Easy check-in: Sign in on a tablet, with no paperwork to fill out.
  • Fast assessment: We evaluate your pain and take digital X-rays or 3D imaging to find the cause.
  • Treatment on the spot when possible: Many emergencies are handled in the same visit, with no second trip.
  • Costs explained upfront: We review the treatment plan and payment options before starting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to see an Indianapolis emergency dentist?

There’s no single price, because your cost depends on the treatment your emergency needs. After a quick exam and X-ray, an Indianapolis emergency dentist on our team will walk you through the cost before doing anything. We accept most insurance plans, including Medicaid, and offer financing through CareCredit, Sunbit, and Proceed Financial, plus self-pay rates and free second opinions.

Do you take walk-ins?

We do our best to accommodate walk-ins. Calling ahead lets us reserve time for you and cut down your wait.

How fast can I be seen?

We aim to treat emergencies the same day, often within hours. Call your nearest office and we’ll get you scheduled

Will you treat me if I'm not already a patient?

Yes. We welcome first-time patients in an emergency, with no referral required.

What should I do if my tooth gets knocked out?

Pick it up by the crown, not the root. Place it back in the socket if you can, or keep it in milk or saliva, and contact us right away. The sooner we see you, the better the odds of saving it.
